5 Plumbing Myths: True or False

We have all heard plumbing advice which has been handed down and shared from our families and friends. Some of these tips are true, but even more of them are false. We decided to share with you below our top 5 myths which we have heard consistently. Here you go…

1. Myth: Ice cubes sharpen garbage disposal blades.
No they don’t. However both ice cubes and eggshells can be a great solution to clean your garbage disposal blades, especially when you start to smell an order from your sink.

2. Myth: Drop lemon peels down the disposal to make it smell good.Lemon Peel
Another solution to a smelly sink which we have been told is that lemon peels can help. There is a bit of truth to this myth, however, the consequences may not be worth it. Lemon peels do smell fresh, however, they can also be a big reason why your disposal may clog. Stick to eggshells, ice and even white vinegar to freshen your disposal’s blades.

3. Myth: Flushable wipes are OK for your plumbing system.Flushable Wipes
Flushable wipes have been marketed as safe for your plumbing system. However, with all of the service calls that we have seen as a results of a clog caused by these wipes, we can absolutely say don’t trust the marketing! They don’t biodegrade like toilet paper. Yes, they can be flushed, but so can a small toy!

4. Myth: I’ve got a blockage – just use a plunger. Plunger
However, you should first try to determine what the clog may be. If you have young children, the culprit may be a toy, or really anything that fits down the toilet or drain! You would be shocked at some of the things we have found blocking plumbing systems. One mistake is to plunge these items – sometimes the result is even worse than the original blockage and all you succeed in doing is pushing the item further into the pipe. Try to hook the object out first. Then call a plumber if you are unsuccessful.

5. The Biggest Myth of All: All plumbers are the same.
Saying that all plumbers are the same is like saying all cars are the same. Plumbers come in all shapes and sizes, ages, accreditations, experience and knowledge.
