Read on to learn more:

LOCATE THE CONNECT POINT

Start by looking for the point connecting your sill cock and the main water supply line. If your basement is unfinished, you should be able to do this easily. Just look where the hose bibb is and go inside and approximate where it is tied to your home. Alternatively, use landmarks or use a tape measure to look for the connection point.

However, in case your basement is finished and it has a drop ceiling, pop a couple of the ceiling tiles and look for the connection. Things will only get interesting if your ceiling is a drywall. In such a situation, get in touch with 24/7 Plumbing and we will perform the hose bibb repair and replacement for you.

STUDY THE CONNECTION

Next up, you need to understand the connection you have. Frost proof bibbs come in different types of connections, including but not limited to:

a) Male Iron Pipe (MIP) Connection

Here, the threads at the end of the sill cock will be exposed and threaded into a FIP Sweat MIP adapter.

b) Female Iron Pipe (FIP) Connection

The threads will be inside. There will also be an MIP adapter attached through soldering to the connection point. As such, the sill cock is screwed on the adapter.

c) Sweat Solder Connection

This is one of the more difficult connections. The sill cock would have a solder fitting cap at the point of connection. This cap slides over the water pipe before a solder connection is made.

CALCULATE THE HOSE BIBB LENGTH

After that, you should find out how long your hose bibb is. These bibbs come in a wide variety of lengths. Therefore, the point at which they are connected to the water supply inside your home will either be close to the wall or further inside your house.

The lengths start at 4” and go up by 2” all the way to around 24”. The most common lengths measure 12”, 10”, 8”, and 6”. Of course, after you have estimated the length of your bibb, look for a replacement that is of the same length.

Measure the length from the end of the sill cock all the way to the back of your wall plate.

SELECT REPLACEMENT FAUCET

Then, you will need to decide on the type of connection to use with your new faucet. Use the information provided in (STUDY THE CONNECTION) above to make this decision.

REPLACE

Before you work on the DIY on outside hose bibb repair and replacement, remember to turn off the water from the mains. Then, remove the old faucet and place the new one inside the gaping opening. Then, use pipe dope or Teflon tape to prepare the male threads inside your home and screw the new bibb in place until all threads are fully engaged. Then, turn the water back on.
