5 Tips to Avoid Costly Winter Plumbing Leaks

Kitchen drain clogs rank among the most common of plumbing problems you will ever encounter. To this end, you might need to try to correct the situation before calling a plumber. In this guide, we will teach you how to clear and clean your clogged kitchen sink drain. Read on to learn more:

USING A BENT WIRE HANGER

This might sound too simple, but it is one of the most effective ways to clear drain clogs in the kitchen. You only need to straighten out a regular wire coat hanger. Then, bend one end to create an artificial hook. Push it past the kitchen drain cover and fish out the waste causing the clog.

This way, you should be able to pull out all sorts of nasty stuff. Remember, as you pull the gunk out, dispose of it in your trash can. After getting enough of the waste out of the drain, run some hot water down the sink and things should clear up nicely.

Mix 1/3 cup of vinegar with 1/3 cup of baking soda in a large cup. Before the mixture is done fizzing, pour it down the clogged drain. This fizzing action will remove the grime and gunk that has built up inside your kitchen plumbing pipes.

Let the sink sit for an hour or overnight. Then, flush down some hot water into the drain. Alternatively, first pour some dry baking soda down the drain and pour in the vinegar.

THE WET AND DRY VACUUM

If you have a wet and dry vacuum clear, you can use it to unclog your kitchen drains. First set it for vacuuming liquids. Cover up the vent and create a tight seal over your clogged drain. For this purpose, consider using an old plunger head.

Then, fire up the machine at the highest vacuum setting. It should pull up the clog up the drain and into your bag. Although this won’t always work, it is still worth the shot.

BOILING WATER

Boil as much water as possible and pour it down the drain in 2 or 3 stages with several seconds between each pour. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to unclog a kitchen drain.

CAUSTIC SODA

Caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide) can cause chemical burns. Therefore, you should cover yourself using eye protection and rubber gloves before using it to clear kitchen drain clogs.

Buy some caustic soda from a local hardware store. Then, mix 3/4th a gallon of cold water with 3 cups of Sodium Hydroxide in a mop bucket. Using an old wooden spoon, stir the mixture and observe as it fizzes and heats up. When this happens, pour it down your clogged kitchen drain and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes before flushing boiling water down the drain. This should clear the clog. If it doesn’t work, repeat the process.

CLEANING THE PIPE

Start by placing a large empty bucket under the trap (the U-shaped pipe) beneath your clogged kitchen sink to collect the water and grime that will spill. Then, use a plumbing wrench to loosen the slip nuts at all ends of the clogged pipe.

This operation is easy to complete by hand. After you free the trap, remove and turn it upside down over the bucket. Then, fish inside it for debris. Repeat the procedure on all pipes that the trap was attached to it.

Use an old toothbrush to fish the tough gunk out of the drain and pipes. Then, rinse the trap with some hot water before putting it back together

THE DRAIN SNAKE

You can buy a drain snake cheaply from your local hardware store. Essentially, it is a long flexible metallic rope with a metallic spiral at one end. Use it to clear your kitchen drain clogs as you would with a wire hanger.

SALT AND BAKING SODA

Mix half a cup of table salt with a similar amount of baking soda and pour the mixture down your blocked kitchen drain. Let it rest for 10 to 20 minutes before pouring boiling water down the drain.

The boiling water, baking soda and salt will produce a chemical reaction to dissolve the nasty blockage that has been giving you a headache.
